My latest gaming obsession has become Alice McGee: Madness Returns. One of the obvious reasons why I love this game is because it is an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, granted a little more twisted adaptation of it, but one none the less. I also like the idea of wonderland being a place of refuge for Alice, even though in this game it has become twisted and warped. So much so that Hatter is robotic, I am not sure if I like that aspect, but others I enjoy. I especially love the Cheshire Cat, in the game he is the character that helps you out throughout game giving you hints about things.
I highly enjoy the fact that this game makes use of every button on the controller. But there comes a time if I haven’t played the game for a while that I forget some of the controls. The biggest one I forget is how to use the umbrella defense. I enjoy the game play and the story. You are running around wonderland trying to find your memories and make life normal once more. All the while you are killing things that are nasty. I have having to kill the teapots the most I think. The game play requires you to move the camera angles around as you move throughout each of the stages. After playing so many games like that I still haven’t gotten used to doing that and forget sometimes and well, end up killing myself. There are different levels known as chapters and levels within those chapters. There are points in the game where you need a pepper shaker in order to defeat some of the monster creatures like the tea pot. Other times you also use a white rabbit time bomb to distract monsters.
I also enjoy the costumes they have Alice in through each “chapter,” I have even seen some girls cosplaying some of the costumes. Some had the vorpal blade, others had the pepper shaker. There are many different outfits that Alice changes into throughout the game. I have seen many girls cosplaying the blue dress with the symbols on her apron and the necklace. I haven’t seen the Mad Hatter like dress or the lumpy fairy looking one picture below. I also haven’t seen the pastel dresses pictured to the right. My favorite to see women cosplaying is the rabbit one with the rabbit feet. At first I didn’t realize what they were cosplaying as, but the more I play the game the more I realized it and enjoy seeing them.
Alice Madness Returns is one of those games that you can get lost in for hours on end. I have found myself getting lost in the game for the whole day while relaxing on the weekends. It makes me want to play the first game and then hope they make more. Check it out if you haven’t yet.
