On a whim we decided to check out Anthrocon this weekend. It was my first time at the convention and I have to say I had a lot of fun. I didn’t check out panels or workshops, I just interacted with other people and took pictures. It was so much fun. I got some amazing pictures. Everyone from the staff to the con-goers even the security were very friendly. The dealer’s room and artist’s alley was HUGE something I would expect to see from like Otakon. Anthrocon planning team made excellent use of the space they had available. One of my favorite things of the weekend was the Furry Parade where all those in furr-suits participate in a parade throughout the convention center.
Pittsburgh’s Anthrocon is one of the biggest in the country and one of the reason I think that is, is because Pittsburgh is so tolerant of other communities/cultures. We don’t ostrasize anyone else and accept what people want to do. I have actually had people asking questions because they want to to understand better. I don’t see that too much other places. Pittsburghers want to learn, and understand a person and why they like some things and why they do what they do. The fur-suiters that I meet this weekend were probably some of the nicest people I have met in a long time.
I have a new found respect for fur-suiters. A lot of the suits that I ha seen this weekend were hand crafted, hand designed. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. It is one thing to make a costume but it is another to make a fur-suit. I loved so many fur-suits that I seen; I was amazed at the detail that went into a lot of them. I am actually looking forward to next year and would like to be press for it.
