On Saturday morning I got the chance to sit down and talk with Yaya Han, the most significant person in the cosplay world. She strives to educate those around that cosplay is about the art of creating a character, through costume and acting. Yaya makes all of costumes from beginning design stage to the completed work. She is an icon to us all. We had a lovely conversation about cosplay and what makes a cosplay remarkable.
What are some of your hobbies outside of the cosplay and anime world?
It seems everything encompasses work. But I like to hang out with my friends and be social. I am prefectly fine with dinner and a movie with them. I also like anything outdoorsy. When I visit my mom in Germany we like to go hiking, I also like rock climbing.
Should women cosplay according to their body type?
I don’t think so. I have tried to change my body type with heels, corsets, body suits, and more. Women should cosplay who they want and how they want. See it as a challenge, you want to make a flattering shilouette. You want to mimic the character. If you can do that then the cosplay is a success. Work with your body, don’t make your body work with the cosplay.
Do you have any advice for women who feel insecure in their cosplays, afraid their bodies might not look as great as they would like?
Safety in numbers. Friends help you feel comfortable with who you are. Always do a trial run of the cosplay to know what you need to make sure it looks the way you want it to. It’s all about illusion. My Felicia cosplay was illusion, I had a flesh suit on with it to help myself feel more comfortable.
What has been the weirdest thing a fan has done?

Sometimes there is nothing you can do. There are times when I can’t have someone there with me. I try to talk to all my fans and when I need to, I try to gracefully and politely end the conversation. It is okay to talk to be, but don’t touch. That is not okay. I try to be understanding that my fans are excited to meet me.
The girls in my group and I have a joke about a cosplay bra: a bra a size too small. What are your thoughts on a cosplay bra like that?
Ah, the cosplay bra <giggles>. I have learned a trick from Vegas go go dancers. It is to wear 3 bras at once. One a normal size, then one a size bigger, then another one yet another size bigger. Give it a try.
What would make something off limits for you, cosplay wise? Something that you would never do?
Ah, never say never. I would have to say I would never cosplay from a hentai. While the costumes might look amazing I think that would cross the line and give off a bad image that I don’t want to give off, or it might be offensive and I don’t want to do that.
