Greetings from Tekko X! Therewais so much going on and so much to see, but also so many people crowding into one area. the convention has been amazing!! The panels I attended were great, AMV’s that I seen were wonderfully put together and the cosplays were MAGNIFICENT! There was so much to do this year that it was hard to pick where to go, what to do or even what to buy.
Saturday was the Gaia panel that Tom hosts. This year he hosted it with Guy who was in heaven being able to host with Tom. They played games such as “Who, Where, What” which was where people had to guess who what or where a picture was and when they got the right answer they got awesome Gaia swag: a hat, a shirt or a Gaia plushie. They told awesome stories: one man told a story of spending three weeks as a cow in zOMG following a group of people around mooing. Another gentleman told a story of meeting his girlfriend of two years on Gaia, I am a hopeless romantic that I wanted him to win the best story, but the trolling cow did. Then they played musical hats. It’s kind of like musical chairs but with hats. The panel was a great success and people were entertained as always.
Right after that was the Vocaloid photo shoot. So many people turned out for it that I was amazed, I always am. Not did people show out as vocaloids, but many people showed up to take our pictures. The rainbow pictures look amazing even though we didn’t have a Gakupo. It was a lot of fun meeting new people and sharing our favorite stories of past shoots or even our favorite vocaloid videos. Then was the masquerade. Usually I am in the audience watching the skits. This year…I was in the masquerade <gasp>. It is a different feel behind that curtain waiting to go on stage and perform something you worked hard on. All the skits in the show were wonderful and you could tell that people spent a lot of time and effort not only in the skits themselves, but the costuming as well. Miku in Wonderland got a Judge’s choice award which made everyone excited and thrilled. The winner was a young lady named Nancy who wrote her own song: Crossplay With Me. She was beyond amazing, she even had Uncle Yo bowing down to her! You can’t get much better than that.
After the masquerade let out it was killer trying to get an elevator or take the stairs as what seemed like the entire convention was trying to use both to get to the next thing they wanted to attend. We walked around admiring the cosplays of the year. There was one that was simply breath-taking, a siren from Final Fantasy. She made the costume with feathers and everything. It was flawless and looks ravishing though I am sure she was pretty cold in it. She also won an award for best cosplay. This year a lot of people took a lot of time to make their cosplays and it definitely showed. I can’t wait to show you all some of the cosplays that we had seen.
There was an Anime Jeopardy! panel that was a lot of fun. It ran much like Jeopardy and the contestants had to answer questions based on categories like Quotes and Japanese Language. Though its sad to say the contestants did not know the characters played by two of the voice actors who attended Tekko this year. Some people did not pay attention to the program or look to see who the voice actors played. Regardless it was fun to watch people battle it out over their knowledge of anime. While Tom spend time with some of his friends I attended another panel which made got me thinking. It was called “My cosplay brings all the….” and it was an 18 and over panel…interesting.

What the panel was about was the exploitation of sexy cosplays have on women and the pandering of women in sexy cosplays. Many things said within this panel I do not agree with such as there are no anime with a strong female lead who is shown as sexy, but covered up. They said when there was a female lead, she was made out to be dumb or always chasing after a boyfriend. I could name at least 5 anime that goes against what they stated within that panel. There was a statement about women dressing in sexy and revealing cosplay as having no pride in themselves, which I think is not true in all cases. There are women who have so much pride in themselves that they have the confidence to wear something sexy. But regardless of my opinion, it was a well presented panel and many of the women (and men) who attended it had a lot to say afterwards.
It was only appropriate that after that panel I went to the League of Dirty Old Men panel. Now I have been to this panel at Anime USA last year and the year before. I knew what to expect and what they would be presenting, tips on how to be a dirty old man and defense against a dirty old man. What I didn’t expect was the same exact content that was presented at Anime USA. The panel is amazing and entertaining. Who would think there were regulations on how to be a dirty old man? But It is also a good thing that they recognize the difference between the fun in it, and when it gets taken too far which is why the also do the defense to help women defend against those guys who go too far in some situations.
This year Tekkoshocon was a lot of fun and I enjoyed each of the panels and events I attended. There were downfalls to the venue such as the limited space, everyone was crowded together when venturing into the stairs or elevators. The venue simply was small for how big of a turn out the convention had this year. Hopefully this means we are able to move to a bigger home. More on Tekko tomorrow; because well I am too sleepy and this post is long enough. Good night my friends, until next time.
