Katsucon was the host of the semi finals for the World Cosplay Summit. This is a cosplay contest bigger than a hall cosplay or masquerade. While the performers do perform a skit and make their costumes, something more is at stake. Those who won the semi finals will be going to Texas to participate in the finals for a chance to be on the USA team. Then the finalist will be going to Japan for the world cosplay summit. What an honor that would be to represent America in the world cosplay summit. This is the second year that the semi finals were held at Katsucon. The semi finals was hosted by none other than Yaya Han herself. She looked simply amazing as always.
Nine teams competed with their skits and costumes. All but 1 was done to music, Team 3: “Cosplay Awkward” were the characters from “Are You There Alice.” They did a cute skit about Alice trying to find her way out of Wonderland, but had to do it by going through various other works of literature like 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. It was very well performed and their costumes were well done, I enjoyed the caterpiller. All of the performances were stunning and provoked some sort of emotion. Such as Team 8, who used a change in the music to help transition the mood and emotions of the skit.
One of my favorites was Team 7, “Fox Glove” they did a skit based off of Fate Zero. The costumes were impecable, I loved how Saber’s costume looked and flowed as she walked and performed on stage. Another one of my favorites was Team 9, who re-enacted a battle from Monster Hunter. It was a great use of stilts, music, and lighting to get the feel of a battle across to their audience. Every skit was well planned and perfectly executed. I did not want to be one of the judges and have to choose just one team to send to the finals.

Another favorite of ours here at Cosplay Kitchen was KarmaLuna, who did a ChronoCross skit. I personally didn’t play the game, but Tom said it hit home because he did play the game and the skit held much to the form and feel the game held. The girls did a superb job of keeping the audience entertain with humor in their skit as well as drama even though the skit was only a few minutes long. KarmaLuna are an amazing team.
Two teams were awarded a spot in the finals, the second place team will be going to the finals as a wild card. The waiting was difficult for those of us in attendance, I can only imagine what it was like for those competing. After much deliberation, the judges finally came to a decision. The second place winner was….Fox Glove. They will be getting a second chance at the spot on the USA Team. The winner of the semi finals at Katsucon this year…..was…..KarmaLuna!
Congratulations to KarmaLuna and Fox Glove for their achievements, and o the rest of the semi-finalist. It is an accomplishment in and of itself to make it to the semi-finals and they all should be proud of their hard work. I hope next year we see them all again competing for next years finalist spot.
