Japanese Folk Tales

I just finished reading Japanese Folk Tales by Yei Theodora Ozaki.  I have to say it wasn’t exactly what I expected, but I did enjoy it greatly.  There were stories with fairies, sea dragon kings, sea princesses, magic in every story of course and more.  One thing I enjoy was some of the stories even said “the moral of the story is…”  It gave you a sense of what the story was supposed to be about kind of like Aesop’s Fables.

There was one story about a man who had a sparrow as a pet that he lavished attention on.  One day the sparrow ate some starch the man’s wife made and she got so mad she cut out the sparrows tongue and cast it away.  When the man returned he was so distraught over his sparrow he went looking for it.  When he finally found it, it turns out to be a fairy who rewards him for his kindness.  He has the option of choosing a big box or a small one, since the sparrow/fairy insists he take a gift, he picks the smaller.  He takes it home and inside is a large amount of gold and jewels.  His wife is greedy and demands he go back for the big one, which he denies to do.  So she goes back and demands the big box.  Fairy/sparrow gives it to her, but when she opens it, she is consumed by demon like creatures who torment her.  The moral to this one was kindness to all creatures.

I don’t know why that story stood out to me the most, but it did.  I gave you the shortened version, but the story had this quality about it, almost something you wouldn’t read to a kid (I would imagine kids dreaming about sparrows with a bloodied mouth and what not), but still something you would tell them as they got older to teach the moral of kindness, and things aren’t always what you expect.  The wife expected the big box to have a ton of gold and gems and what have you, but it turned out to be bad stuff.  If she had been nicer, maybe the outcome would have been different, who knows.

Some of the stories didn’t seem too different from some of the folktales we tell.  And I think that might have been one of the disappointments I had.  One thing I expected from the book of tales, but it didn’t have was references to Yoaki, or maybe the dragon king and such were the yoaki but I didn’t catch on.  There was no stories with a tanuki or kappa so I was bummed out about it, but that’s okay.  I still go to read some pretty cool stories.   I am a part of a group on goodreads.com and they suggested the anime Japanese Folk tales on Crunchyroll that I think I will have to watch.

Has there been a manga/anime/video game that you were disappointed with?

Until next time my friends.  ^_^
