Matenrou Opera

One of the awesome things about anime conventions is that there are musical guests, some you may not have heard of until attending that anime convention.  While at Anime USA, I got to work security for one of those concerts.  It was for Matenrou Opera, the girls standing in line were in tears because they were able to see the band and be so close to them.  I haven’t heard of Matenrou Opera (or simply Opera) until Anime USA, so I was intrigued to hear them and see what the fuss was about.  This was also their American Debut! How awesome is that?

When they came on stage they were dressed elegantly and refined, but their music is not your typical “opera”.  They had their fans going wild shortly after beginning their first song Independent.  When they played Helios; the sadness and sorrow radiated from Sono as he remained stationary during the song.  His expressions showed that he was pouring his heart and soul into the song.  Helios was written shortly after the disastrous earthquake in March 2011, as Sono sings the sorrow and pain of that time comes to life.  During Hiai to Melancholy, Sono sang a phrase then the audience would sing it back to him.  You could also see Yu, the drummer singing along with the songs, something not many drummers do.

This band is simply amazing vocally, musically and visually.  They are a part of the visual kei movement which is a genre that is a mix of glam rock, punk and heavy metal. I find myself looking on youtube for their videos and wanting to get their cd’s to add to my collection.  Their video for Helios has different version which focuses on the different band members.  The song is so beautifully haunting.  While the lyrics are in Japanese its still moving and has become my favorite song of theirs.  Here is Sono’s version of Helios.
